LAURA MARÍA ISABEL RUIZ OCADIZ
Literary Fiction Author - Arthouse Film Director
Art Director - Conceptual Artist - Actress

Early life
Laura Maria Isabel Ruiz Ocadiz was born on October 25, 1983 in Mexico City, in the cradle of a family of musicians. Raised a catholic and calling herself a “Hawkingian” later in life, she began to develop her skills in different artistic disciplines at an early age, her inclinations steering towards the seventh art, Mexican melodrama and classical literature; influenced by her film-obsessed uncle, Ricardo Ocadiz (1943-2005), concert pianist and member of the “Da Capo Jazz Quartet”;1 who in the sixties stood out as one of the new jazz creators in Mexico.2
Being present at her uncle's concerts, in venues such as the Ollin Yoliztli or Chopin in Bellas Artes, Mexico, she lives along a plethora of musicians and stardom personalities; while her father, Enrique Guillermo Ruiz de la Torre (1943-2023) —who in later years would play a crucial role in Maria’s film career— works two shifts as a medical representative and high school science teacher:
Once I finished my homework, under the strict supervision of my father, I enjoyed spending time with my grandparents, who were very fond of mathematics, literature and the study of the language (Spanish); later joining my uncle in his analysis of every minuscule aspect of a collection of classic films and watching some old cartoons through his Movie Viewer: a hand-held plastic device similar in appearance to a Super 8 camera, that worked with long cartridges which, when turned crank, displayed the frames through a viewer.
—Ruiz Ocadiz, in an interview for the Tokyo International Short Film Festival.3
Professional career
Psychology, theater and T.V.
In the second year of her university studies, and thanks to the support of Karl and Carlos Bek, actors, doctors and friends of his father, she manages to appear several times as an featured extra in the Mexican soap operas CLAP (Roberto Gómez Jr., 2003) and Reb3lde ( Pedro Damián, 2004), from Televisa; and in Los Sánchez (Ángel Mele, 2004), from TV Azteca. Later, while still studying to get her major, she enroles in Musical Comedy at the Artestudio Performing Arts Center, debuting in a non-televised scenario in the role of “Lori”, from Newsies (Teatro Ciudadela, 2004). Her second role on stage would be that of “Mrs. Darling” in the play Peter Pan (Foro Cultural Chapultepec, 2005), in which she also plays a pirate, a native woman and a mermaid. She tries luck in the reality show Big Brother 3R: Recargado (Endemol, 2005), placing in the first 200 places among more than 500,000 registered;4 5 and in 2006, she plays the leading role in Beauty and the Beast (Teatro Independencia). She majors in Psychology the same year, and her thesis Incidence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia in a group of female ballet dancers is selected by the Graduate Faculty of the University of Tepeyac as the best of 2007.6
She finishes her television career as a featured extra in Pobre Rico, Pobre (Mele, 2008), from TV Azteca; and in the series Capadocia (HBO, 2008). She continues her artistic work behind the scenes as a stagehand at the Teatro Xola Julio Prieto, in order to take a closer look at another aspect of the theatrical production; and co-founds the theater company La Vie Bohème, along with the late producer and actor Erik Ríos Cantú (1989-2009), directing classic plays for family audiences at the Felipe Villanueva Forum and at the Casa de la Cultura del Parque Naucalli, until the dissolution of the company, after Ríos' death.
Writing and Filmmaking
2009 presents itself as a year of difficult transition for Maria, who, after the loss of her partner, leaves the theater scene. Having gained some popularity online as an amateur film critic, years before the boom of modern social networks, she receives two gifts from his father's college classmate and friend, Dr. Alejandro Cervantes Bustamante, a regular reader of literary classics: First of all, a compendium of the works of Oscar Wilde, which Maria treasures for years; and secondly, one year's tuition at the SOGEM Writers School (General Society of Writers of Mexico).
While studying Literary Creation (2010-2012), she becomes selected by the Mexican short story writer Gerardo de la Torre for the “Melodrama Writer” scholarship by Telemundo and Carlos Romero, creator of “Las Tres Marías” (Televisa); taught by the Colombian librettist Héctor Forero (Amor de mis amores, 2004). At the end of her studies in literature —being a member of the Research Department of the Neurological Center at the ABC Medical Center— she contributes to the scientific journal Anales Médicos; while looking for a creative outlet.7 This turns out to be a watershed that, months later, leads her to collaborate with the electronic publication F.I.L.M.E. Magazine, contributing her cinematographic analysis of several works and serving as a film correspondent at various events and premiere screenings.8 Her artistic career branches out into the creation of her first short film: Nothing is what it seems (2013), presented at the Felipe Villanueva Forum and in the non-competitive exhibition of the Cine Sin Muros Festival; while, on the other hand, it is banned from the National Auditorium of Mexico for its “high sexual content,” with a kiss being the only physical contact between the characters. In 2014, Maria becomes the winner of the “Luis Buñuel” contest by CONACULTA (now the Ministry of Culture) and Canal 22, being part of the team of scriptwriters for the animation capsule ¡Clic, Clac! and becoming the sole scriptwriter of the television blocks Cinema 22 (arthouse and auteur cinema), Cineteca de Oro (Mexican Golden Age cinema) and La Música con Manzanero (The Music with Manzanero); in which she also serves as a voice director of announcers. During this time, her second short film, The Gift (2014), is released, where she worked with the then non-actor Robert Kett, and manages to show the film at the Crystal Screen Festival of the National Cinematheque of Mexico (Cineteca Nacional de México).
After taking the “Film Directing” course, taught by the famous Diego Luna, Maria decides to solidify her artistic training with a Master of Cinematography at Altrafílmica (2015-2017), meeting editor, writer and film director Juan Pablo Cortés (Love Hurts, 2002; Luciana, 2010), who from the beginning becomes hier mentor, as well as an important figure in his development as an arthouse filmmaker; placing her under his undivided tutelage through an editing scholarship at the Center for Cinematographic Studies (CEC) in Mexico City (2017) and continuing said mentorship until 2019; two years after Maria finished her film studies. In 2017 she serves as Production Assistant in the feature film Sátiros (Roberto Mares, 2017), based on the book Homophobia (Fernando del Collado, 2007), together with the producer Javier Reyes, where she meets the actors Emir Martínez and Ismael Osorio, who in the future would star in her first professional-level short film.
Months before publishing her first novel, she is invited to participate in the cultural program FilmeRadio, broadcast by Radio Instituto Politécnico Nacional (95.7 FM), along with the writer and film critic Praxedis Razo, during the celebration of the Jewish Film Festival, in Mexico.9
In 2018, she marries actor, producer, montagist and literary editor Roberto Eduardo Arenas Farquet, and enjoys a well-deserved break from cinema that leads her to write three literary fiction novels, edited by her husband and released independently under the label Luminosa Publishing, namely: Amnistía (Amnesty, 2018), El canotier de Steve: La verdad y la vida (Steve's Canotier: Life & Truth, 2020) and Un desvelo de indocilidad (A Wakefulness of Indocility, 2021) —altogether giving her a certain fame as a “new genre creator”, by incorporating screenwriting and film montage into poetic prose—, calling the attention of the Spanish journal Málaga al Día, who publishes an article about her work:
(Amnesty) teaches us a very important life lesson: that we are all inhabitants of the same planet.
That we are all migrants, in some way.
—Elena Zamora Simón, “Book Hunter”, 2021. ‘Málaga al Día’ Journal (Málaga, España).10
In 2021, she co-founds, together with Arenas Farquet, her production house, Pertúrpure Cinema; writing and directing the short films Ni tú ni yo (Neither You Nor I, 2021) —starring Emir Martínez and Ismael Osorio—; Extraviar los conejos (Misplace the Rabbits, 2021) —starring Robert Kett—; Somos un motivo (We are a Motive, 2021); and Amor sin féretro (Love without a casket, 2022). She achieves the long-awaited recognition with these films, obtaining more than 60 laurels from international film festivals in more than 45 cities, including 38 awards and nominations, highlighting awards from the Tokyo International Short Film Festival and the Munich New Wave Short Film Festival.11
Nowadays, Maria is working on the post-production of her debut feature, Un desvelo de indocilidad (A Wakefulness of Indocility), an oneiric tale of an insomniac candy taster targeted by a sect, which she writes and directs, adapting her novel of the same name to the big screen.
María resides somewhere in beautiful and mysterious rural Mexico, where she enjoys conversations about literature and cinema with her husband, all the while attending to the endless demands of her two exasperating cats.

Literary work
-
Amnesty (Luminosa Publishing, 2018).
Genre: Literary Fiction.
Themes: Migration, racial equality, species conservation.
Language: Spanish.
Number of pages: 227.
Summary (2nd edition): Cassandra becomes a migrant after escaping the earthquake that devastates her nation during the "Period of the Vultures." Attached to the one who will make her lose control of time, she glimpses the meaning of death, while increasingly identifying with the vultures in her desperation to find companionship. In her debut novel, the director presents a poetic prose narrated about the unstructured cognitions of dependency. Psychological and dreamlike in character, the work is based on the approaches of Peter Sloterdijk's 'Estrangement from the World'. It also transforms the concept of death linked to the Catholic celebrations of 'All Souls Day' and 'All Saints Day' in Mexico.
-
Steve's canotier: Life and Truth (Luminosa Publishing, 2020).
Genre: Literary fiction, psycho-philosophy.
Themes: Family dynamics, academic corruption, astrophysics.
Language: Spanish.
Number of pages: 286.
Summary: Amadeo Gastrell is a NASA candidate who becomes embroiled in the academic pursuits of his prestigious university, experiencing a conflict with his scientific goals. His brother Duncan takes advantage of Amadeo's outdated ethics, as he focuses his energy on interpreting the light of the aurora borealis and recognizing universal feminine freedom. In her second novel, the director presents a psychophilosophical work with cinematic editing, a mixture of second-person narrative and point-of-view sequences. Dreamlike in character, this literary work is based on the writings of Arthur Schopenhauer, compiled in The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics, and takes Sigmund Freud's perspective on psychic dynamics to the extreme. He also incorporates Immanuel Kant's concept of ethics into his characters and implements a new perception of asceticism.
A Wakefulness of Indocility (Luminosa Publishing, 2021).
Genre: Literary fiction, dreamlike-psychological thriller, play (theatrical).
Themes: Daydreaming, intimacy, lost childhood, cults, substance abuse.
Language: Spanish.
Number of pages: 268.
Summary: Gertrudis's lost childhood generated an obsession with the ideal home, forcing her to invade the privacy of others. She will confront a subsistence system flawed by social values, accompanied by eight friends determined to hide their feelings. In her third novel, the director presents a work of dramatic narrative structured as a theatrical piece. Psychological and dreamlike in nature, the work is based on Eric Erikson's theories of psychosocial development and, in its extensive interpretation, builds on Sigmund Freud's Die Traumdeutung. It also incorporates the key concept of Abraham Maslow's work, "A Theory of Human Motivation".
